The avocado is a fruit—a large berry with a single seed. The fruits of the most commonly sold varieties are about the size of a large lemon. Its fat content is relatively high. The avocado is one of the most calorie-dense fruits. However, its fats are entirely beneficial to cardiovascular health. It is particularly rich in vitamins K and B9. It is also a source of provitamin A, as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6. The yellow-green flesh of the avocado is neither sweet nor salty; it has a slight nutty flavor and a creamy, butter-like texture when the fruit is fully ripe.

There are different varieties of avocados:

  • Hass: This variety is a type of avocado with a dark green, bumpy skin. Because of its taste, size, shelf life, and high yield, the Hass variety is the most popular and widely sold avocado in the world.
