The name of this fruit comes from the Tupi-Guarani word “naná naná,” which means “fragrance of fragrances.” For a very long time, this fruit was considered a rare and precious commodity. However, that is no longer the case today. It can easily be found on market stalls year-round, even though it is a tropical fruit. Its skin is covered with hexagonal, scale-like patterns. The color of its juicy, sweet flesh generally ranges from white to yellow.
There are different varieties:
- Extra Sweet: Known for its very sweet taste, this fruit is rich in fiber and nutrients.
- Victoria: Recognizable by its golden/light brown skin, the Victoria variety has a sweet and flavorful taste.
- Sugar Loaf: Its light-colored skin, elongated shape, and size make it a very recognizable variety. Its flesh is tender, sweet, and juicy.
