They range in size from a few grams (cherry tomatoes) to nearly 2 kg. They are generally spherical in shape, more or less flattened, more or less ribbed, but some are heart- or pear-shaped. The color, which starts out green, usually turns red when ripe, but there are also white, yellow, black, pink, green, purple, orange, and two-toned varieties.
